Tony Peterson finds some old footage of Bristish chess in the good olde days

The links below may be of interest to members, perhaps to put on the website. Reminiscences of how one of the famous London clubs used to be back in the 50's.

Also I found the short pathe newsreel very amusing to see all those old fellows trying to eat their dinners and play chess at the same time!
Regards
Tony

Noel Stewart reports from National Club Major ILFORD vs METROPOLITAN

It is probably newsworthy to include the result of this match played away at Ilford on Sunday 24th January 2010.

Ilford fielded a useful team, led by a 193 graded player on board 1. Unfortunately, we lost 3.5-1.5; the match was closer than the score suggests with a couple of key games just running away from us towards the end of the session.

Board details are give below: note that in the National Club Major the average grade of any team must be under 160.

Ilford won the toss and had white on the odd boards.

           ILFORD                            METROPOLITAN

1. John Hodgson   (193)     1-0      Tony Peterson   (181)

2. Syd Kalinsky    (162)   0.5-0.5   Ian D Calvert      (172)

3.Tom Barton        (162)     1-0      Petr Vachtfeidl   (174)

4. Jason Kilmach  (150)      1-0      Peter C Doye    (156)

5. Jef Page           (149)      0-1      Noel M Stewart  (145)

                           Score 3.5 - 1.5

Many thanks to all those who played and we will look forward to some good results in the Plate competition.

DRUNKEN KNIGHTS 2 V METROPOLITAN 1 A Lost Opportunity?

George Dickson reports from Metropolitan Team 1.

On the 9th November, last year, we played against the strongest team in this years London League Division 2 and we played really well, only losing 4.5-5.5.

The measure of our performance can be judged by the fact that just five weeks later in London League Division 1 the Drunken Knights first team (containing no less than five players who played against us) held the mighty Wood Green 1 to a 6-6 drawn match.

The five players who had played against us - Rich, Rawlinson, Makepeace, Bennett and Leyton scored 3/5 against Wood Green 1 but scored only 2.5/5 against Metropolitan 1.

Our match on the 9th November could easily been a draw or a win for us, both Zafer and myself drawing games that we might have won.

Captains Report: Hackney 2 vs MET 2

A close match considering being out graded on all boards.  Chris Bennet has a fine adjournment which I hope he will publish and I have a comedy of errors with a missed winning combo against a strong Francis Chin.
